Book Your Electric Vehicle MOT Test

Kwik Fit are proud to offer comprehensive, reliable electric vehicle MOT testing at over 600 centres across the UK. Find your local Kwik Fit today and book in your electric vehicle for an MOT & service to keep it in tip-top condition.

As the UK’s number one MOT tester, we make it simple to book your EV in for its annual test; simply fill in a few details below and select an appointment that works for you.

Do electric vehicles need an MOT?

Just like cars with petrol and diesel engines, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles both still require a valid MOT certificate if they are more than 3 years old. The main difference is that electric vehicles do not require an emissions test, therefore this part of the MOT test is omitted.

All Kwik Fit MOT centres are equipped and capable of carrying out MOT testing for hybrid and electric cars, although some vehicle exclusions may apply (including Tesla models currently). Please contact your local Kwik Fit MOT centre for more details.

When is your EV due for its MOT?

Can’t remember when your EV had its last MOT? It could be coming up soon! Don’t worry, there are two ways you can find out when your electric vehicle's MOT test is due:

1. Locate your current MOT certificate and check the expiry date

If you want to preserve the existing expiry date on your MOT certificate (it’s easier to remember if it’s the same date every year), you’ll need to book your EV MOT test up to 1 month (minus a day) before it expires.

2. Use Kwik Fit's handy MOT Due Date Checker

Enter your details into our useful date checker tool and we’ll tell you when your electric vehicle MOT is due to run out. If you’re keen to remember and book your EV MOT way in advance, you can rely on our free MOT reminder service too. We’ll send you a message when your MOT is coming up for renewal, giving you time to find a slot that works for you.

What's included in an electric vehicle MOT?

An electric vehicle MOT is very similar to a regular vehicle’s MOT (aside from the emissions testing). In order for you to be issued with an MOT certificate, our technicians will check the following components against the minimum standards outlined by the DVSA:

  • Vehicle Identification Number
  • Registration plate
  • Lights
  • Steering and suspension
  • Wipers and washer bottle
  • Windscreen
  • Horn
  • Seatbelts
  • Seats
  • Bodywork
  • Doors
  • Mirrors
  • Wheels and tyres
  • Brakes

For a more detailed overview of the checks we carry out on these components during an MOT, head over to our main MOT page.

How is an EV MOT different?

An electric vehicle MOT primarily differs from a regular MOT in the emissions testing section. Electric vehicles don’t have an exhaust system, since they’re powered by electricity from the battery and not petrol. This means that they don’t produce fumes and, therefore, do not require the emissions and noise tests that cars with regular combustion engines and exhausts do.

How long does an EV MOT take?

Your electric vehicle MOT will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour to carry out, as our highly-trained technicians will check everything thoroughly.

Feel free to leave your electric car with us and head out for a bite to eat or to run some errands nearby while we work on it. Alternatively, all our EV MOT test centres have comfortable seating and free WiFi for you to make yourself at home while we see to your car.

Look after your EV with expert MOT & servicing

The best way to ensure your electric car passes its MOT with flying colours is to get it thoroughly serviced first at your local Kwik Fit. Our technicians will give your electric car a full service, ensuring it is safe, filled up with fresh oil, and road-ready.

Is it more expensive to MOT an electric car?

No, it’s not more expensive to MOT an electric car compared to a regular ICE (internal combustion engine) car, even though some of the components tested differ. The cost of an MOT is capped at £54.85. For an exact quote, fill in your postcode and number plate in the search bar above.
