Hybrid Car Tyres
Hybrid car tyres are cleverly designed to meet the specific requirements posed by this type of vehicle — heavy but environmentally friendly. Unique to regular car tyres, hybrid car tyres have subtle differences in features, functionality, and design.
With motorists becoming increasingly eco-conscious, many drivers are making the switch from combustion engine vehicles to hybrid or all-electric cars. With this switch comes questions about the differences between these vehicles, their engines, and their tyres.

What are hybrid car tyres?
Hybrid car tyres refer to tyres designed specifically for use on hybrid and electric vehicles.
Different in make up than regular car tyres, hybrid car tyres are engineered to have a low rolling resistance, be more durable, and be much quieter on the road. Since hybrid vehicles rely, in part, on a battery, hybrid car tyres are designed to use as little energy as possible in their connection with the road. This not only leads to better fuel efficiency, but also to a longer range for these types of vehicles. The lower the rolling resistance of the tyre, the less friction between tyre and road, and — ultimately — the more energy saved.
Hybrid vehicles also deliver instant torque which can put additional stress on tyres. So, hybrid car tyres are designed with this in mind.
Do hybrid cars need special tyres?
Yes, hybrid cars are built differently from traditional cars so, as you can imagine, the tyre specifications are slightly different. There are a few reasons why hybrid cars require special tyres, which we provide in more detail below.
Weight
Due to hybrid vehicles having sizable batteries, electric motors, and Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), they require heavier tyres in comparison to traditional cars. You can determine the weight your car tyre can take by referring to the load index number printed on the tyre.
It’s important to not overload your tyres as this can negatively affect handling and fuel efficiency.
Reinforced tyres & hybrid cars
For heavier vehicles, like hybrid cars, Kwik Fit stocks a range of reinforced tyres. These are perfect for supporting higher vehicle loads safely. As we mentioned above, when it comes to hybrid cars, they are often much heavier due to the weight of their internal machinery. So, typically, tyres wear down much quicker on hybrid cards as a result of this — and due to the impact of instant torque produced by electric motors.
As such, hybrid car tyres are often reinforced to mitigate wear. All tyres contain beading to enhance stability; reinforced tyres contain additional beading to make sure that the tyre is strong enough to withstand being put under additional strain.
Fuel efficiency
Hybrid car tyres benefit from low rolling resistance, which can help to improve fuel efficiency and road mileage. Car owners can find the fuel efficiency of their tyres on the tyre sidewall. A higher fuel efficiency rating will be indicated by a letter grade closer to ‘A’.
Noise
Hybrid cars run much quieter than traditional cars so to counter this, hybrid car tyres are made with noise reduction in mind. Hybrid cars are designed with specific features to enhance the vehicle's performance, efficiency, and environmental footprint.
Which tyres should you choose?
Because hybrid and electric vehicles are relatively new, your best bet is to go with like-for-like tyres based on what is already fitted to the vehicle or OE tyres, also known as original equipment. These are tyres that have been specifically designed for your vehicle, so they are likely to come with several benefits like reduced fuel consumption (meaning less money spent on fuel), better handling, and safer braking.
OE tyres feature markings on the tyre sidewall specific to each vehicle manufacturer.
